INTRODUCING THE FOOTBALL CREST INDEX
A new crowdfunding project has been making waves on social media over the past week called Football Crest Index. It is the brainchild of James Kirkup, a UK-based graphic designer.
The publication documents the rich history of all 47 clubs who have played in the English Premier League through their club crests and design.
The idea came from a trip to the Camp Nou, which James spoke exclusively to IBWM about:
"I'd always been super interested in the graphic history of football clubs, but with Barcelona they made me consider how symbolic the elements in crests are, so I set out to celebrate them.
I went round the houses with how to execute the idea, initially it was going to be the biggest clubs from around the world all in one book, but it lacked the beauty that some of the 'smaller' clubs hold in their crests, and I didn't want it to just be a book on the 'big clubs'. The format of league by league opens it up a bit more and helps us include some real great gems."
With the project currently 100% funded on Kickstarter, James and the Football Crest Index couldn't have hoped for a better start. This first book is just the start for James and his team, "our longer term goal is to create a series of Index's that cover as many clubs as possible, supported by design talent that actually supports each club. Alongside that, raise some awareness about a ton of good charity's whilst creating a solid database of every crest that's existed. Well, that's the digital part of the project we're currently working on in the background."
You can back the Football Crest Index on Kickstarter here, although rewards are now limited.
